Mission
The
mission of Arts Iowa City is to make the visual arts flourish through
visual arts exhibitions and promotion, artist mentoring and networking,
and community visual arts education.
History
Arts Iowa City (AIC) is Iowa City's oldest nonprofit visual
arts organization. Otherwise known as the Iowa City/Johnson County
Arts Council, AIC was
founded in 1975. Since that time our volunteers have developed and
implemented visual arts exhibitions, artist services, and community
art programs.
Community
Served
AIC
provides artist members from Iowa and surrounding states with exhibition
opportunities and other artist services. We serve the greater community
of Iowa City by providing art exhibitions, gallery events and educational
programming. All AIC events are open to the public.
Recent
Projects
Arts Iowa City currently looks forward to working collaboratively
with the Englert Civic Theatre.
Past
Programs
Exhibiting members' work has been the main focus of AIC throughout
its history. Over the years AIC has maintained a gallery in the
Jefferson Building,
implemented a satellite gallery program in collaboration with local
businesses,
and pursued street-level gallery venues in the downtown Iowa City
area.
Additionally,
AIC has created, fostered and implemented a wide variety of arts
programs. Outdoor mural projects, sculpture festivals, outdoor public
sculpture purchases, poetry readings, poetry magazine publications,
dance concerts, art fairs, artist surveys, art classes and juried
national art exhibitions are examples
of AIC's programming breadth. Several past AIC programs have even
become independent nonprofit entities; local nonprofit arts organizations
with Arts Iowa City roots include The Iowa Arts Festival, Riverside
Theatre and Eulenspiegel Puppet Theater in Iowa City; and Legion
Arts (CSPS) in Cedar Rapids.
Collaborative
Efforts
Over the years AIC has collaborated on special projects with
a variety of local organizations and businesses. These collaborators
include Adagio Restaurant, Book Arts Club, City of Iowa City, Englert
Theatre, First National Bank, Iowa Chapter of the Women's Caucus
for Art, Iowa City high school art programs,
Iowa City Public Library, Java House, Lorenz Boot Shop, Senior Center,
UI Museum of Art, UI School of Art and Art History, UI Writers Workshop,
United Action for Youth, West Music and The Galleries Downtown.
